Approximately 8 out of 10 couples who regularly engage in unprotected sex (at least every three days) conceive within a year. To increase your chances of getting pregnant, it’s helpful to know when ovulation occurs. This will boost your chances, as you can aim for unprotected sex during your most fertile period. The egg survives only 12 to 48 hours each month, while healthy sperm can survive in your body for up to five days, increasing your chances of conception.
Even if you have sex before ovulation, any sperm inside your body can fertilize a live egg within five days of your last sexual encounter. Therefore, it is recommended to continue having sex on less fertile days as well.
Ovulation occurs 14 days before your next period. The average menstrual cycle is 28 days, with the first day being the first day of your period. For women with regular cycles, ovulation usually occurs around day 14, but it can happen any time between days 10 and 16. Your cycle may be shorter or longer, or it may vary from month to month. There are other ways to identify your fertile window besides using an ovulation calendar.
There are three main ways to determine when you are most likely to ovulate and be fertile:
– Check your cervical mucus – During ovulation, the mucus produced by your cervix becomes more noticeable, clearer, and stretchy. Observing changes in cervical mucus can help identify your fertile days.
– Track your temperature – Use an oral thermometer to measure your temperature every morning before getting out of bed to spot a small temperature rise that often occurs on the day of ovulation.
– Test hormone levels – Home ovulation tests can accurately detect hormone surges in urine that occur during ovulation.
Most women are most fertile between their late teens and 25, specifically between the ages of 19 and 26. During this time, a woman engaging in regular unprotected sex has about a 92% chance of conceiving within a year. Women’s fertility declines with age. The sharpest decline begins around age 30. For women aged 35-39, the chance of conceiving after a year of regular unprotected sex drops to about 82%.
If you are concerned about conceiving, speak with your doctor, who will discuss any next steps that may help you get pregnant, especially if you are 36 years or older. There are many ways to improve your chances of getting pregnant, from lifestyle changes to assisted conception. Your doctor can refer you to a specialist if additional support or advice is needed.
